Farmer & Maker

I know you are quite busy- so here’s a little update… our blog has a new name “farmer & maker.” This name perfectly reflects who we are, have always been and hope to be someday. Simply said, we love to make things – and we love to grow things (food, cows, business ideas, kids).

In some ways this is our inheritance- the fortune to live out our passions. We have been provided with the skills, confidence and support to pursue “crazy” ideas like making sculpture with junk metal.  And, yes… we happen to have more crazy ideas – like writing a book, growing our dairy herd and making cheese on our hilltop.

We had a little idea about 9 years ago, it’s summarized like this… Gatski Co. -  Art, Food & Experience. The making of metal sculptures and metal tables is just the beginning. The rest is slowly unfolding – but will most likely involve cows and food. Each week we are taking a few minutes to plan; it is extraordinarily exciting!

We hope you will join us as we mosey along -  a comment, a thought, a contact. With that said… here’s a Hearty Welcome to farmer & maker! We’re looking forward to meeting you here.

big times on a little mountain

We have a new Gatski Metal website! We are super excited about it – it might be hard for you to picture us jumping up and down- so how about really, really big smiles?  Our very first Gatski Metal website was built by our dear friend Conor of Mepush. That was about 7 years ago. It was high time to freshen it up! We were happy to work with Conor and his team at Mepush again.

Take a look!

In Celebration we’re giving away a free Gatski deer head on the first day of buck season here in Pennsylvania. That would be November 28th.

In order to win, simply share  news of our website or something from the site with your friends and family via Facebook, Twitter or your favorite social media network. Then email Kate to let her know that you spread the word. That’s it! The giveaway ends Monday, November 28th at 12 am. One winner will be selected at random and notified by email.

Inspiration in Venison Pie

Every day I run down thru the tweets of those I follow. It’s a semi mindless exercise – kind of like getting from here to there. Every so often something stops me in my tracks. Today it was this… A Venison Pie. Check out the detail…

Here’s how it came to me, Kate of Kitchen at Camont passed along a message from The School of Artisan Food – which I had never heard of.  It sounds absolutely fascinating. You should have a look – maybe we should go someday?

The Creative Life- Problems & Enthusiasm

Awesome Print by Reconstructing Ideas on Etsy $20

We’ve been thinking a lot about enthusiasm lately. Some days we are spilling over with excitement; and other days… ummm not so much. It’s usually on the latter days that we rally ourselves with a pep talk. We can do it! Yes we can! We decided that enthusiasm is the answer. After all, it can be faked. It’s really just a ways to the means.

What’s the point of this?

Even up here in our bucolic setting – things don’t go smoothly. Maybe something catches on fire in the shop (happens more than you might think) or  maybe UPS drops one of our boxes off the top of a skyscraper (or something akin to that). Besides the unpredictable, random events of life, most of our problems are created by us. Every last one of em.  In those moments of feeling tired & not inspired- some part of our brains says, “we made it this way, get up and do it.”

I’m still pondering the idea of The Creative Class.  Is there a new breed of “creative” people? Do they have a unique sense of the world? How different would the world be if we realized how much our problems were created by ourselves? How about if we realized that just a dash of “enthusiasm” might be all we need.
